Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum): “In general, cinnamon is used as a physical and emotional stimulant. Researchers have found that it reduces drowsiness, and the pain and number of headaches. Cinnamon essential oil is used in aroma therapy blends to get rid of airborne bacteria. It thus prevents many respiratory tract infections. It alleviates negative thoughts and depression.”

Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citrullus): “Lemon grass contains about 0.4% of volatile oil. Its volatile oil is 65% citrol, 12% myrcene, and 23% sundry oils. Lemon grass oil has been found to be anti-microbial, particularly against gram positive bacteria and fungi. It has also been found to be pain killing, central nervous system depressing, fever reducing, and anti-oxidant. It seems that lemon grass oil applied to the joints will relieve the pain felt in arthritic joint conditions.”

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans): “The nutmeg in aroma therapy is used for its ability to treat stress, pain. The health benefits of mutmeg oil can be attributed to its medicinal properties such as its role as a sedative, stimulant, relaxing, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and bactericidal substance. Traditionally, nutmeg was believed to be effective against the plague and hence it was popular during the Elizabethan era.”

Rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis): “With its warm and penetrating aroma, is one of the most stimulating fragrances used in aroma therapy. Rosemary was one of the earliest plants to be used in medicine, as well as for cooking and for religious rites. During the middle ages it was used to smokes out devils during exorcism. It has a very strong antiseptic action so is terrific to use in aroma therapy recipes for cleaning.”
